Heartache and disappointment in Cleveland

What is worse than not winning “World Championships”, league titles and not having a superstar on your team? I would assert it is having the promise of all these things ripped out of your hands. Don’t believe me? Just ask the Cleveland Cavaliers, their fans and the owner, Daniel Gilbert. They were the beneficiaries for seven seasons of an intense media attraction to Lebron James, one of the biggest sports star on the planet. With name recognition similar to the other single name sports icons like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant, Lebron was the guy everyone looked to bring basketball championships to Cleveland.

Unfortunately, as learned by the other three men on the list, a championship does not com e just because one good player or in this case perhaps one great player is on a team. Championships are due to the combination of good and great talents. Cleveland Cavaliers owner Daniel Gilbert had seven years to put together the necessary pieces to win a championship with Lebron James and he simply failed to do so.

This is not the first time Cleveland has suffered from sports disappointment. It seems Cleveland is the proverbial bridesmaid, always dolled up and ready to be the main attraction but usually foiled and left holding the bag. This happens frequently to the small market teams. The economics just don’t favor them. Big talent is rewarded with big money. If you want to keep that big talent you have to arrange big money and the pieces to show you are serious about winning.

A promise unrealized

Seven years of experience in Cleveland showed Lebron James the Cleveland Cavaliers did not have the money, the attraction or the desire to put the pieces together to make him a champion. James was very clear that winning championships was his goal. People will criticize him for leaving Cleveland, saying he is chasing the money. Wouldn’t you? I mean sure it is great to see guys play their whole career in one city, but it is very rare.

By leaving Cleveland and his home state of Ohio, James has fueled an intense fire full of criticism from fans and the owner of the Cavaliers. Are they right for feeling betrayed? Possibly. I mean how often is a local product the guy you think will bring you a championship? Los Angeles can attest to the joy of this as Kobe Bryant is a local guy who has brought the storied Laker franchise five titles now. Lebron wanted this for Cleveland, but it seems he was the only one.

Okay, so Cleveland has added some players to the roster in attempts to strengthen their chances, but come on, who believe Shaquille O’Neal would make the difference this past off-season? Don’t get me wrong, I like Shaq. In his prime he was as dominant as any center in NBA history, but this is not his prime. The other cast of characters on the Cleveland Cavaliers roster are not even names I know and I watch a fair amount of basketball.

Sour grapes

Have you heard about the open letter written by the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers to the fans? The guy went off in obvious frustration at having let the greatest basketball star from Ohio slip out of his fingers and along with him any serious hope of an NBA title in Cleveland within the next decade. This guy should be more upset that he wasted his chance, perhaps a once in a lifetime one.

If you want to see a millionaire crying in his beer read this guys words. In one day he went from being part of the love Lebron team to calling him every name under the sun. When James’ notoriety was his greatest blessing he was all about the “King”, but when the deal soured he was among the first to denounce and mock the franchise player.

What I find the most hilarious is the assertion by this owner that he will guarantee the Cavaliers win a title before Lebron James does in Miami. This is definite spite, because in truth the Miami Heat immediately placed themselves in the short list of serious NBA contenders with the addition of Lebron James and Chris Bosh to a lineup already well stocked with Dwayne Wade, who has one championship ring. Coupled with former Lakers coach and title winner Pat Riley as the general manager and braintrust of building a championship team, Gilbert’s words are even more foolish.

Look for Miami Thrice to make the headlines as they biggest threat to overturn the los angeles Lakers attempt at a Three-peat.

Lasting effects

What will be the long term effect of this trade? Most likely will be an extension of the NBA title drought in Cleveland to be sure; unless Daniel Gilbert goes on a ridiculous spending spree to bring the right people to Cleveland to make a serious contender out of his Cavaliers. If this happens the people of Cleveland should revolt, as it would mean he did not try hard enough when Lebron James was there.

I think the Heat can win a championship with this trio. Look at the Boston Celtics. They added Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in the summer of 2007 and won the championship in 2008 and took the Los Angeles Lakers to seven games this season. The Miami Heat will have to mimic the Boston trio’s ability to work together without letting egos get in the way.

Another lasting effect if the Miami Heat wins a championship will be a repeat of this scenario where teams arrange multiple high dollar free agents. Amare Stoudemire is already working on this angle for next season. He is trying to from his own trio with the New York Knicks. Of course the fly in the ointment is the availability of cap space, which the Knicks did not have like the Miami Heat did this off season.

Cleveland will miss Lebron James. Their attendance will drop, probably significantly, the licensing income will decrease as well and the fan base will ultimately turn their blame on the owner. Ultimately he is the man who must answer for their predicament. You see, now he is the king!

If you were Lebron James, would you have stayed in Cleveland?

Dobson,

Labron actually took less money to move to Miami than Cleveland was offering him. $30,000,000 to be exact so I guess winning is more important to him than money.

It's hard to be a hero in your home town but LaBron pulled it off and I would have stayed if I were him.

Yes, this is not the usual experience with sports stars. People do not like lebron because he is so talented and successful. I probably would have quit on Cleveland too when i saw they had no desire to invest in what was needed to win.

The amount of money paid is unfathomable to me, but something that will never change. I saw this morning where James, Bosh and Wade all took less money than they could have to form this super team. I am encouraged they want a championship more than the money.

Wow, as I was actually WATCHING the news about this topic, I saw this Hub. What a coincidence! I'm not really into sports or players for that matter but this was a good Hub. :)

dallas - It is interesting to hear how much money they turned down in the process of trying to win a championship or many as they hope to see.

Thanks for the comment.

I don't do a lot of current events as hubs because they normally won't have a long life, but this one was too thought provoking to pass up for me.

Thanks for reading and commenting.
