Solar Powered Lights - outdoor lighting not tied to the grid
77Outdoor lights - unplugged from the grid!
Are you looking for a great landscape lighting choice? If so, be sure to include solar yard lights in the pantheon of choices available to give your landscape a glow even when nature’s light gives way to the evening. You will be so pleased with these offerings that draw upon the natural resource of the sun to save you not only dollars, but time and money as you can eschew the myriad of wires underneath and around your yard to power your exterior lighting needs.
These wonderful outdoor solar lights are innocuous looking, easily blending into your landscape plan, biding their time in the sunlight drawing the light they require to return a night’s worth of light for your delight. In fact they do not actually need a full day of sunlight to do their job, just a majority of sunny exposure to fit your bill. Who would not be thrilled to yank a few bucks out of the electric company’s hand while still enjoying a lighted path or landscape area?
Many uses for these lights
Probably the predominant use for these types of lights is to illuminate a walking path so that any comers are not concerned about trying to navigate walkways to your home. Outdoor lights that are placed under the eve of your homes entrance or corner of the house are intended to shine bright and give a large spectrum of light for your use. These lights present more focused light that is directed downwards to assure your walking path is clear of obstacles that might cause a trip or fall.
Some people also use the lights to line flower beds around their house for security purposes as well. If your property is well lit it discourages mischievous behavior as well as criminals. All landscape lighting can be considered an extra measure of security as it reduces the amount of unlit areas around your home. These solar landscape lights will easily pay for themselves with the added security you enjoy.
A plethora of designs mean they will fit your décor
Of course there is an unending list of landscape styles, from classical to new age, from eccentric to just, well….weird! But who are we to judge or criticize another for enjoying their creative impulses? In the wide array of solar yard lights you are sure to find some to your liking. Outdoor solar lighting has become more popular over the last few years, driving a growth of manufacturers and consequently the wide selection.
Most of the outdoor solar lights have the solar array in the top of the unit so it will be assured to have the best chance of collecting sunlight during the day light hours. Outdoor lights like this are quite efficient in this process if you are careful to select the correct place when you place them. If you happen to make a bad choice the light will tell on you the first night and you can quickly shift the location before your neighbor exerts his supposed overwhelming knowledge and tries to “help” you.
Solar yard lights add a nice touch to your night time environment
These soft lights will not overwhelm your yard with an opening night at the movies crossing spotlights spectacle. Depending on where your lights are placed, they can even highlight colorful blooming plants that will benefit from the lighting. Many of us spend so much time making our landscaping look good that it seems a shame to lose almost half the time to darkness.
No one said the outdoor solar lights have to be just for security or safe walking purposes. Any time we can get more bang for our bucks we are interested and these outdoor lights are just right for most needs. The solar lights for your flower garden will allow night time visitors to be able to marvel at your botanical prowess at a time of the day when the summer temperatures may be most forgiving.
How they work
The key to these lower cost lighting solutions is a clear access to the sun light we all love to see. On the top of most units is a tiny solar array that collects the rays of our largest star to use in the process of generating energy to power the lights when the sun is no longer doing the job. The energy is sent to batteries for storage and is recalled when the amount of natural light dissipates to a predetermined threshold. At this point the circuitry comes alive to illuminate the bulb inside the unit and provide you with a light that won’t add even a penny to your already bulging electric bill.
Usually the light provided by these units is only enough for one 10 hour period. So, if you have consecutive days with little or no sunlight you may see a decreased return in light from your unit, depending on how much storage capacity the internal batteries have. Rainy days still provide some light to charge the batteries, but not nearly the same intensity as a sunny one, so again your expectations must be tempered to match your reality.

Experiment with the varying styles
I am sure there are die hard style mongers (just joking) out there who might want to quibble with this part of my writing, but it won’t hurt to mix your styles if you want different themes or feelings in different areas of your landscaping scheme. Some of the lights are designed to be whimsical and deserve to be considered with the same fervor as the more classical choices.
With such a wide spread pantheon of personal preference to cover, manufacturers are searching in all areas to create something new that no one has thought of to broaden their market. Hurray for us as this just adds to our potential choices. The sky is the limit, so search for what you truly desire!
