65Start your mutual funds investment early
No matter your age or how much time you have spent in the working world you should have some portion of your income devoted to the task of retirement planning. There are many options available to you about where to invest your hard earned cash, but I want to discuss one that I really feel the most comfortable with. It is investing in what are called mutual funds.
What is a mutual fund?
A mutual fund is a type of security device in which a diversified group of stocks, bonds and other types of securities are collected to give the investor a way to spread their money over many different sectors of the economy. It is unlikely that all sectors would be going down or up at the same time, so the mutual fund gives you a good probability of steady gains.
As the particular fund goes up, everyone who buys a share sees a gain. When the stock market index falls, your mutual fund may see loss in the value as well. However, with the broad diversification of the mutual fund you get away from the volatility of a one company stock which can experience radical changes from day to day. Take for instance the stock of oil giant BP which saw steep declines following the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. In contrast mutual funds with only a fraction of shares in BP saw very little decrease in their value.
There is so many types of mutual funds, which should I choose?
You are correct in thinking the scope of possible mutual fund options is nearly endless. You have growth stock mutual funds, money market funds, stock index funds, mid cap funds, small cap funds, large cap funds, balanced funds, international funds, growth and income funds, fixed income funds, bond funds sector funds and many more.
So how do you go about learning this? Do you seek the help of a financial planner? That is certainly a good option. This world is full of potential pitfalls and you want to know the money you set aside to invest is going to the right place.
How do the fund managers decide the types of stocks included?
This is part of the answer to why there are so many fund types. Each fund type is devoted to a specific investment philosophy. Take the stock index funds for example. They try as best the can to mimic the stock indexes by structuring their portfolio of stocks to resemble the stocks included in a specific index.
For example a fund with a connection to the Standard & Poor 500 Index will have some shares from many of the stocks included in the index with the potential to mimic the performance of this index by spreading the potential for risk over several industries.
If you select a mutual fund with only stocks you will see a higher potential for gain or loss, since there is no other lower risk securities to help balance the ride. Usually the high risk mutual funds like this are geared for and marketed to investors in the early part of their working career who have time to let the stock market gyrate up and down on its way to its usual long term increases.
The mututal fund market place has many large companies with scores of funds to meet your needs
There are some giants in the mutual fund marketplace with billions of dollars of assets and proven track records you might want to investigate. Fund companies like Fidelity, Franklin, American Funds, Oppenheimer, Vanguard, MFS, Invesco and others have the proven track records to make mutual funds investment pay you some large dividends toward you retirement planning goals.
What does the stock market report tell me about mutual funds?
Truthfully, your mutual funds will not reflect the stock market indexes very often, except maybe in the case of the funds modeled closely after a particular index. Due to the nature of mutual funds, they have enough diversification that they will not mirror the stock market indexes as they change each day. This is not to say they may not follow the trend, but understand the concept of the fund helping to mitigate your risk by spreading your interest as far and wide as it safely can.
Not sure about mutual funds? Ask questions!
Before you embark on any new adventure it is a good idea to ask as many questions as it takes to feel comfortable before taking the leap of getting started. this is especially true when it comes to matters of money. Stock markets rise and fall every day and unless you are willing to put your money in and not worry you may find this way if investing to be very worrisome.
Truthfully mutual fund investing is a very good way to allow your money to grow over time to presnt you with a nice retirement fudn to live on after you finish the everyday job cycle.

We have had a mutual fund for some time but lately it has felt that we are just losing most of it to the market. Each time it comes out of our pay checks and then it disappears into oblivion. I guess we may not be able to retire as soon as we thought.
