Can you believe this is the end of the fourth year of release for Nintendo's newest flagship system, the Wii? My kids are never part of the crush of people who experience a game system in its initial release, so we really were not even in the Wii arena for the first year and a half. I expect it was through the experiences of some of their friends that my kids became interested. In fact it was playing with the Wii at other’s house that was their first real introduction.

I had heard some press about the revolutionary control system as well as the application of the game consoles in rest homes as a type of therapy for those unable to actually stand and move around. By having a character on the screen carry out their actions the residents were able to have the sense of accomplishing a physical task. The reports were very positive as many localities initiated programs to take advantage of Nintendo’s newest technology.

We joined the Wii nation during the Christmas season of 2008. With a sparkling new 37” Sharp LCD television mounted on the brick wall of our spanking new den (converted from a carport that summer) we were ready to make some tennis, bowling and golf balls fly! My kids fell in love immediately, spending countless hours with their new prized gaming console.

A need for more control devices

If you own a Wii you know by now that it comes with controllers that will allow two people to play simultaneously. The game that was packaged with our unit in 2008, Wii Sports had five games: tennis, bowling, golf, baseball and boxing. Of these games only tennis, baseball and boxing were made to allow two to play at the same time. Accordingly the two control sets included were just fine. But as the title list increased, so did the possibility that more people could play simultaneously.

Nintendo did provide the ability for Wii remotes from other systems (meaning other Wii consoles that your children’s friends have at their homes) to “sync up” with your Wii console if they were to bring them over for a group play session. This process is not terribly technical and is described in your Wii technical manual. The concern we had was damage to the Wii remotes traveling to and from your destination.

So let us suppose you have either a family of three or four or more than two kids and want to play the game titles available now that allow multiple players at the same time. What can you do? Purchase extra controllers. These controllers are available online for easy selection and purchase.

Another reason for needing controllers

Have you seen the hilarious you tube videos about people destroying their LCD TV when they throw their controller at the screen? I mean that it is hilarious to watch but would be a terrible thing if it was your own situation.  Let’s be honest, manmade devices fail from time to time. Although I have not heard of an epidemic of Nintendo Wii control devices failing, it is possible.

Wii Remotes are available online

The main control unit for the Wii is called the Wii Remote Controller. Some people refer to it as the Wii Mote. Whatever you like, you can find it online at many places. Did you know it not only comes in white but black as well? Obviously you won’t buy the black replacement for your white Wii console, but I was unaware of the other choice, so I thought some of you might be as well.

Nunchucks are there too!

Some of the fitness offerings make use of the little attachment to your Wii Remote that Nintendo calls the Nunchuck. I believe this little component probably suffers the most abuse as many of the games that utilize it are intense ones where the joystick like control part is used quite a bit and often with a high amount of force.

Wii MotionPlus addition

With the advent of games such as Wii Sports Resort, Nintendo rolled out a new addition to their Wii Remote called the Wii MotionPlus. This is a piece that fits on the bottom of your Wii remote in the rubber protective sleeve to allow for a better experience in you gaming as you twist, turn and wave your wireless controller in attempts to play your games.

Protective rubber sleeves for the Wii Remote and Nunchuck

Nintendo made some really intelligent decisions in the way they put together the Wii package. Obviously bundling Wii Sports was the shrewdest choice, but providing a sweat resistant and shock resistance rubber outer coating helps to preserve the integrity of the wireless controllers as we take out our abuse on them. Should you buy a new unit and either forget to get one with the sleeve included or need extras, they are easily ordered online as well.

Wii wireless sensor

When you power up your Wii the screen will tell you to wait while everything is loading. Included in this process is the synchronization of the wireless devices, including the sensor bar you are directed to place in a spot clear of any obstacles that will prevent communication from the Wii Remote. The wireless sensor is a very small gauge wire that trails out the rear to be connected in the rear of the Nintendo Wii console. I know how fragile wires can be, especially in the company of kids, who do not have a sense of what can happen, so I have included a link to this as well.

Nintendo Wii Wheel

My kids got Mario Kart for the Wii this past Christmas. In the package they got was a provided Wii Wheel, which makes driving similar to the real thing. It is not a necessary piece of equipment as you can simply rotate your Wii Remote 90 degrees and accomplish the same, but if you desire the racing wheel it is online also.

Wii Balance Board

Wii Balance Board

Have any of you fitness freaks worn out your Wii Balance Board yet? I looked at our board when we got our Wii Fit and I wondered about how much abuse the thing could withstand before showing signs of wear. I mean the design of the place where your feet make contact is solid, but I think of the stress possible by some potential users and am curious how it holds up under the strain. It is out on the internet if you need a replacement too.

Hope your Wii experience is a good one

My kids have added some newer titles to their collection, so I expect eventually we will need to replace some of our equipment. The Wii Ski is a neat game, which uses the Nunchucks along with the Wii Remote as you try to ski slalom and do acrobatic tricks. The Wii Fit makes use of many of the controllers so I know they will get a good amount of use with it too. Try as many games as you can and wear these things out!

An added benefit is you have a "forum" to be with and enjoy your children!

dallas - It certainly is a family friendly video game console. We routinely all collect to play in the colder months of the year, when the sun sets much earlier.
